County Executive, Legislators Award $3 Million to Dimensions
May 7, 2003, CHEVERLY, MD -- Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson joined Council member Marilyn Bland and members of the County's State Delegation to present a check for $3 million to Dimensions Healthcare System, Wednesday morning. The grant will be used to assist Dimensions Healthcare System achieve financial stability. "Today is the first deposit on a long-term commitment to the County," Johnson said to a standing ovation at the Prince George's Hospital Pavilion. "This will be an annual commitment to the hospital."
Dimensions Healthcare System, a non-profit organization, is the largest provider of healthcare in Prince George's County. Its facilities, Prince George's Hospital Center, Laurel Regional Hospital, Bowie Health Center and Gladys Spellman Specialty Hospital and Nursing Center, care for more than 200,000 patients annually including more than 75% of the 90,000 people in Prince George's County who are uninsured. "Your service comes from the heart," Johnson told hospital employees. "Research has shown that patients recover quicker when they receive care out of love and compassion."
Prince George's Hospital Center the regional Level II Trauma Center and Level III Perinatal Diagnostic and Neonatal Intensive Care Center for Prince George's County and Southern Maryland (St. Mary's, Charles and Calvert Counties). It is also the only regional provider of sexual assault/rape counseling services, emergency psychiatric services and provider of care for the mentally ill requiring involuntary commitments. More than 50% of patients seen at Prince George's Hospital Center are either uninsured or are covered by Medical Assistance.

"Dimensions Healthcare System is grateful to the County Executive and the County Council for their financial support," said Kirk Blackman, Chairman of the Finance Committee for Dimensions Healthcare System and Prince George's Hospital Center Board Member. "The $3 million commitment, in addition to the State of Maryland $2 million match in funds, will significantly assist us in our current attempt to bring financial stability to the hospital."
