Focus on Ethical and Legal Issues of Informed Consent at Til Bergemann Medical Ethics Lecture
March 3, 2003, Cheverly, Maryland - Dr. Evan Gaines DeRenzo, Ph.D. and Steven Smith, J.D., will serve as keynote speakers at the second annual Til Bergemann, M.D. Medical Ethics Lecture. Sponsored by Prince George's Hospital Center, The lecture will be held on Wednesday, March 19th from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Deitz Memorial Auditorium on the campus of Prince George=s Hospital Center.
Evan Gaines DeRenzo, Ph.D. - Dr. DeRenzo is a bioethicist at the Center for Ethics at the Washington Hospital Center and an Adjunct Lecturer for the Graduate Program in Biotechnology for the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. DeRenzo has extensive experience in bioethics as a consultant for NIH, Johnson and Johnson and the State of Maryland. She has written extensively on the subject of ethics and presented papers throughout the country and world. Dr. DeRenzo received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and her Master's from George Washington University.
Carolyn Jacobs, J.D. - Ms. Jacobs is a member of the law firm Hodes, Ulman, Pessin and Katz, P.A. in Towson, Maryland and has practiced health care law exclusively since 1985 representing all types of individual and institutional health care providers. Ms. Jacobs provides transactional and regulatory advice to health care providers as they face an increasingly regulated and constantly changing regulatory environment. Areas in which Ms. Jacobs assists clients include corporate compliance, fraud and abuse and self-referral analysis, licensing and certification, certificates of need, reimbursement and HIPAA privacy compliance.
Our speakers will explore the ethical considerations and moral imperatives as well as the legal issues associated with informed consent.
The Till Bergemann, M.D. Medical Ethics Lecture Series has been established in memory Till Bergemann, M.D., a well respected family practice physician in our community. Not only was Dr. Bergemann dedicated to the patients he served, but to the on-going study, practice and enhancement of medical ethics in the region and nationwide. This annual lecture series was set up to provide continuing education in the field of medical and healthcare ethics to physicians, nurses, other health care professionals and community members.
