A Medical Story Of Survival

Bowie Health Center, Maryland's only free standing emergency room, was unknowingly thrust into the national spotlight on October 7th, when the Washington Sniper set out to kill a child.
Dr. Tom Lyons was the only Emergency physician scheduled that day, but by chance, a General Surgeon, Dr. Vincent Sayan and an anesthesiologist, Dr. Maria Escalera were on the premises. A team that had never really worked together managed to perform seamlessly, making critical decisions not typically made outside a skilled trauma center. While the team systematically stabilized their patient and prepared him for transport, local trauma centers throughout DC were assembling their own teams, not knowing where the child would eventually be sent.
It's a system Maryland doctors have been trying to perfect for years but there's no question luck was part of the recipe.
