Johnson and Kelly Discuss Future of Prince George's Hospital Center

Upper Marlboro, MD - Today, Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson met with Dimensions Health Care Systems Executive Director Winfield M. Kelly, Jr. to discuss the future of Prince George's Hospital Center. During the hour-long meeting, the two discussed both the short-term and long-term needs of the hospital and what options may be considered.

"We began a dialogue today that will continue for months to come. The future of Prince George's Hospital is critical to residents of this county. Providing the highest level of service and indigent care is essential," said Prince George's County Executive, Jack Johnson.

During the meeting, the two discussed, among other things, the recent task force report and the full array of options available to the county. They also discussed the potential payment by the county with a matching grant from the state to keep the hospital running for several months. "Until we examine the financial aspects of any option I cannot commit the resources of this county. However, I will not allow service to suffer at the hospital that so many of our residents rely on," said Johnson.

"We will do a complete review of the report and the various options put forth, as well as other approaches that may not have been considered. We will expedite our review of the request for a matching grant, but even if this is done, it is a short-term solution only." Stated Johnson.

County Executive Johnson agreed to make a decision on the proposed $3 million in the next few weeks. The hospital has received annual grants from the county for many years and such approval by the county executive and county council would not be unusual.
